The Labor Commandos of Prisoners in Hohenschönhausen

The Stasi used prisoner labour details to operate and maintain the remand prison. The exhibition focuses on the living and working conditions of female prisoners. Women were used in the prison kitchen, as cleaners and for sewing, washing and ironing. Under the control of the Stasi, living together in the details was characterised by hard work and spying on each other – but also by solidarity and friendship.

The previously inaccessible kitchen wing of the prison has been opened up as a new exhibition area. Visitors can explore it independently with the help of tablets. Interviews with former prisoners, informer reports and Stasi documents are made accessible virtually via an augmented reality app. Volumetric images of those affected in 3D also enable virtual encounters with former prisoners.
