Accessibility

Your visit

Unfortunately, not all buildings are wheelchair-accessible due to the fabric of the historical building and restrictions imposed by the preservation order for sites of historic interest. The Memorial is constantly endeavouring to make improvements. An overview of the current barriers on site can be viewed here.

The visitor information centre, the bistro and the bookshop are fully accessible. A lightweight wheelchair or folding chairs may be borrowed from the ticket office.

Lockers of different sizes and heights are available for storing bags and rucksacks.

Unfortunately, there is no tactile floor guidance system on the grounds or in the buildings.

The tour of the Stasi prison is only partially accessible. The prison hospital is only partially accessible on the ground floor. The exhibition "Imprisoned in Hohenschönhausen" is wheelchair-accessible. The exhibition "Involuntary Community" is not wheelchair-accessible.

Some of the educational rooms at the Memorial site are suitable for wheelchair users. For better planning, please register wheelchair users when booking an educational programme.

The library is accessible to wheelchair users.

Visits to the former Stasi prison are only possible as part of a guided tour. The basement prison and the new building are accessible via lifts. Please allow extra time to use the lifts.
Pre-registration by phone: +49 30 98 60 82 30 to facilitate the tour schedule and organisation.

The lifts are not designed for wide electric wheelchairs. A lightweight wheelchair may be borrowed from the ticket office.

The exhibition "Imprisoned in Hohenschönhausen" is wheelchair-accessible. The exhibition furnishings are not wheelchair-accessible.

Audio guides in German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Danish and Russian are available free of charge from the visitor service centre. The audio guides are not available in Easy Language.

The media stations in the exhibitions are not subtitled, and there is no translation into German Sign Language. The exhibition texts are not in Easy Language.

The exhibition section "Involuntary Community" in the new prison building is not accessible to wheelchair users. The texts and media stations are available in German and English. They are not available in Easy Language or German Sign Language.

Accessible toilets are located at ground level between film rooms A and B and in the workshop courtyard next to the cafeteria. There is a wheelchair-accessible toilet on the first floor in front of the exhibition area. There are no toilets in the buildings that are visited as part of the guided tours.

Guide dogs are permitted.

There are eight designated bus parking spaces and numerous car parking spaces within the immediate vicinity. Directly in front of the entrance, there is a car park for people with disabled parking permits.
