The organisation
The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial has been in existence since 1994, and the foundation under public law was established in 2000. Its bodies are a Board of Directors, a Board of Trustees and an Advisory Board.
The foundation is financed in equal parts by the state of Berlin and the German Federal Government. It falls under the responsibility of the Berlin Senate for Culture and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
The foundation researches the history of the Hohenschönhausen detention centre and provides information about political imprisonment and repression in the GDR through exhibitions, events and publications. It commemorates the victims of political persecution and encourages society to come to terms with the history of the communist dictatorships.
