Objects, documents and pictures

The collection at the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial comprises around 15,000 objects, documents and pictures relating to the former prison site and its prisoners between 1945 and 1989. These include memorabilia from former prisoners. Leaflets and banned writings document the resistance against the dictatorship and why people were imprisoned at Hohenschönhausen. The collection also includes objects that illustrate the everyday work of the prison guards and interrogators who worked here. Some of these objects can be seen in the permanent exhibition, while the majority are stored in depots. The Memorial thus has one of the most extensive collections on the subject of "Imprisonment in the GDR".

Not only are we preserving this evidence of past injustice for future generations, we are also making it available for a variety of uses: for research, for political education, for exhibitions and for publications.
