Hartmut Richter, born in 1948 in Glindow, first attempted to escape to West Berlin in 1966. In August of that same year, he successfully escaped to the West by swimming across a river.

After the transit agreement between West and East Germany, Richter served as an escape agent for people in the GDR. Upon trying to help his sister escape to the West, he was arrested and sentenced to fifteen years' imprisonment.
