Dieter Drewitz was born in 1943 in Schulzendorf. He was confronted by accusations of espionage by the Stasi beginning at the age of seventeen.
In 1966, he was arrested for the second time after sending two letters to a radio station in West Berlin. Following 18-months spent in prison, he faced discrimination upon trying to find work. After submitting a petition to leave East Germany, Drewitz underwent two years of harassment before being permitted to move to West Germany.
