Mario Röllig was born in 1968 in East Berlin. He was caught attempting to escape to Yugoslavia via Hungary. The Ministry of State Security (MfS) tried to recruit him as an informer (IM), but he refused to spy on his West German boyfriend. Due to this refusal, Röllig lost his job at Schönefeld airport and was displaced to work in a scullery of a station restaurant.
