Born in 1946 in Suhl, Erhard Neubert attempted to escape to West Germany at the age of 18. The Ministry of State Security caught him and subsequently sentenced him to one year and seven months at the prison in Berlin-Rummelsburg.
Following a second attempt to leave the GDR six years later, Neubert was again imprisoned. In 1972, the GDR released him as part of an amnesty agreement regarding political prisoners. His departure to West Germany was finally granted two years later.
