Edda Schönherz was born in 1944 in Berlin. As a famous television presenter in East Germany, she made statements that were not seen as politically correct.

In 1974, she visited the West German embassy in Budapest with her children in order to obtain information about legal departure opportunities. However, she was soon arrested and sentenced to three years' imprisonment by the Stasi. During this time, she never saw her children.
