Dr. Jörg Kürschner

Dr. Jörg Kürschner was born in 1951 in Hannover. He was detained in 1979 for having smuggled western literature into East Germany from Jena. The Ministry of State Security (MfS) interrogated him for six months in the remand prison in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen and subsequently sentenced him to five years and eight months in jail. In the winter of 1981, West Germany ransomed him, leading to his release.

Since 2003, Jörg Kürschner has been the chairman of the "Friends of the Memorial" and vice chairman of the advisory board of the memorial.
