Marita Ulbricht was born in 1943 in Berlin. She resisted the restrictions on travel in the GDR and tried to escape along with some of her colleagues at the East Berlin hospital Charité. The plan failed. She was arrested near the border-crossing point at Berlin Zimmerstraße and brought to the remand prison in Berlin-Hohenschönhausen.
Later, she was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison, which she spent in the women’s jail in Hoheneck in Saxony. She came to West Germany in an exchange of prisoners in 1982. Since 2011, Marita Ulbricht has worked as a tour guide in the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial.
